Finland Aviation Union Walks Out And Strikes

The Finnish Aviation Union began a strike on Monday morning at companies offering technical services for airlines. The action by about 900 employees affects the domestic airlines Finnair, Blue 1, and Finncomm.

Finnair had to cancel at least nine return flights on Monday. The cancelled flights were mostly domestic, as it is easier for Finnair to arrange alternate transport for domestic flights than for international services.

There are likely to be more cancellations on Tuesday, and Tom Christides, head of communications for Blue 1, says that if it continues, the strike would stop all of the airline’s flights.

If no settlement is reached, cancellations could become much more frequent, as aircraft are routinely serviced every two days.

Finncomm announced on its web pages that its flights will continue on schedule for now.
